Out In the Cold
I saw my first one on the 26th, on the way to the movies: the discarded christmas tree, tossed onto the windy pavement to await its fate, after faithfully serving up good cheer for the holiday. This is all the thanks it gets? Can't the cold-hearted tree tosser wait for the citywide recycling days, or lop off the branches for mulching, or simply keep their tree up and decorated for a while longer? I am a big fan of keeping the tree up as long as possible. It takes a lot of effort to get it up and dressed, and more effort again to take the ornaments and lights down, carefully pack them away, and then re-use or recycle the tree itself. So I enjoy my tree and put off the chore as long as possible. It's only January 2, people! Don't turn your backs on your trees, like some Dickensian villan! And please, when you do take yours gently out of the house, don't put it into a stupid plastic bag as if it's an old ham sandwich. If you want to protect rugs or floors as you take the tree out, grab a bedsheet and lay it down on that to carry it away. You can wash any sap out, and you've saved a glob of petrochemical product into the bargain. But I, for one, plan to keep my tree up, and to sit by it nightly, as I am doing now, for as long as the needles hold on. Can't help lovin' this tree of mine.

We've got two trees up this year. Keeping them both up until sometime next week. DOS will do curbside pickup for chipping them into mulch through next week.
you are so tender-hearted. trees DO have feelings, too
I am so sure that CHristmas at your house is a beautiful sight, and with such sentiment , and such an eye for amazing beauty
these trees have feelings, it's not your imagination, it's really true. we are so much a disposable society, and we need to care for the things that we bring into our lives. just like in the Little Prince. You seem to know this so well
this weekend is the feast of the three kings and we leave the 2 trees up till then. my husband is fighting that! he leaves the patio colored lights on for january. it really cheers the gloomy nights.
there should be another holiday in january for lights
I didn't see one until the 27th and I was amazed-- usually by the 26th I see a body. I do love when people clip off the branches and put them on the open ground or in the tree pits. There is a very fancy group of tree pits up our street with holly, juniper, regular pine, maybe even box, lovingly arranged in the little cast-iron fenced-in area... those pits are not the pits!
I spent much of the weekend volunteering for the City's Mulchfest. Among other activities, I spent some time going out in a truck to pick up trees from the sidewalk to bring them back for chipping into mulch. The mulch gets used in the city's parks, and residents can also pick up free mulch for their gardens. I got several big bags for my backyard native plant garden.
Hey, Xris:
My plan is to head over to Green-Wood with my tree this coming Saturday...I saw a Christmas tree on the street today with all its branches lopped off, probably for mulching. That's more like it! Best, tcg
