toward the end of summer, I ignore that
daylily/goldenrod bed, and pick what's
left for the table...a Joe Pye of my very
own [!!!] with aforesaid 'rod, blue perennial lobelia,
nicotiana, queenie lace, and a stalk of
anemone robustissima that doesn't
last five moments as a cut flower. This is
when I really want to get into the flowerbed
and slash all the foliage down and have
done with it! Ever feel this way late in
August?

I came back to find four types of noxious weeds in the lily patch, but it's no more than I deserve! The potted stuff mostly survived, but the petunias keeping this birdie company went bye-bye. After what I saw in England, this isn't exactly a soft landing, but the contrast makes life all the more textured, no?

last posy
This posy of herbs plus echinops is from the Marylebone
Farmers Market, where I went in lieu of a final jaunt
way east to Columbia Street. Already wrapped up and
packed my garden clippers. Sad to leave London, but why
be greedy with one's astonishing good luck. I humbly
apologise to Riley, whoever she is, who somewhere else is leading my
true life. For surely I am leading hers.
